Day 1: Syllabus & Introductions

First of all please note that ESL 115 is only open to students who have either successfully completed ESL 500 or have placed into ESL 501 via the EPT. If you have not taken ESL 500 or taken the EPT you may not take this course. If you have any questions about this, please ask.

Here's the course syllabus. We will review it in class but go over it again when you get a chance and let me know if you have any questions.

Now let's take a personality test! Please follow these instructions:

Today we will be doing the color personality test that will help you know more about yourself and others. This personality test is made up of three steps. This is to appeal to different learning styles.

First, I will hand out a color survey sheet to you. Score all the points on the scoring table presented at the bottom of the backside of the page.

1. Selecting Pictures: Go over the Color Images and rank the pictures in order of your preference. The image that best represents your personality receives 4 pts, the next 3, 2, and 1. Write the points for the Card Images on the scoring matrix (e.g, Green 4, Gold 3, Blue, 2, Orange 1).

2. Selecting Text Description: Read the text describing the features of each color. Similar to above, rank them in the order that is closest to your personality. The text that best describes your personality gets 4pts, the next 3, 2, and 1. Write the points down on the scoring matrix. The scoring maxtrix is on the color survey sheet.

3. Color Survey: Fill out the color survey. After completing the survey add up the total points for each choice (A, B, C, and D). Write the total number on the scoring matrix. Finally add the scores of all three tests and calculate the total score. The highest score is your primary color (e.g., If I have 5 points for blue, 7 points for gold, 13 points for green, and 4 points for orange, my primary color is green.).

4. Sit and wait until everyone finishes. Once everyone is finished, I will put you into a group according to your primary color.

5. Group Activity: I will now give you a large piece of paper and markers. Draw a picture that best represents yourselves or things that are important to all of you.
