First off, there was some confusion about the difference between acknowledging and accommodating for another argument (on the counterargument slide in argumentative essays). When you acknowledge another argument you simply show it exists and that you have considered it but you ultimately disregard it. In comparison when you accommodate, you also acknowledge the argument but instead of ultimately disregarding the entire argument you use a few of the points from the other argument to prove your claim. In other words, the difference between acknowledging and accommodating is that when you accommodate you actually accept some of the other side’s ideas and use them for your own argument. Compared with all of this, refuting an argument is more an attack. You point out specific weaknesses in the other argument and disregard them. This is different from acknowledgment in which you admit the other argument is there but do not actually attack specific elements of it. For Thursday's homework I will not take off points if you do not identify the type of counterargument. Simply note that there is an opposing viewpoint and describe how the author argues against it.
Second about the assignments for Thursday, I expect you to bring your diagnostic essay as well as your completed graphic organizer. For the diagnostic you can either choose to revise your essay according to my comments, bring your first draft without my comments, or bring the copy with my comments. This is entirely up to you. What I’ll be looking for is that you can give feedback to your peers. For the graphic organizer, you don’t need to write every sentence from the original essay on the sheet. Instead you can underline sentences and put numbers to match up with those sentences or you can just write phrases on the organizer- it’s up to you. I won’t be strict about the way in which you write the information on the organizer. Instead I’ll be looking for content. Just do your best.
Let me know if you have any more questions. :)
